Review of APA Hotel Kagoshima Eki Mae

We spent our first night in Kyushu at APA Hotel Kagoshima Eki Mae. It was a no brainer choosing this hotel due to its close proximity to Kagoshima Chuo Station. From the station, it was a breeze to locate the hotel. It is barely a 2-minute walk from 'West Gate' of JR Train Station – Exit 2. The West Gate exit by right next to a huge Bic Camera.

We booked a Small Double Non-Smoking Room and paid 4,800 yen for it - less than SGD60 (without breakfast). As with many Japanese business hotels, the room was small and compact - 14 sq.m. to be exact with the bed pushed right against the wall.

The room was clean and neat with two yukatas and a pair of paper cranes placed on the bed when we entered. The wifi worked well and overall, the amenities were good. The body soap, shampoo and conditioner were from Shiseido and I even received a pc of DHC facemask and a hair scrunchie when I checked in. Nice. These are only available for female guests though. There is no safe in the room though and I thought the water kettle could be cleaner. Other than that, nothing much to say about the room.

Hotel Lobby

Next to the lobby area, you can also find coin-operated washing machines/dryer, a microwave and a vending machine. Adjacent to the lobby, there is also an in-house restaurant/bar, Itsuki, that opens for breakfast and dinner. You can opt for a breakfast plan for 900 yen more, but it wasn’t really necessary since there are plenty of other food options available in and around the train station.

Hotel Restaurant / Bar

Speaking of location, the hotel is well placed with its close proximity to the train station and its connecting shopping centre AMU Plaza. The tram and bus stops are also very close by, making it very easy to go sight-seeing using public transport.

Do take note that there are two train stations in Kagoshima: Kagoshima Chuo (where the Kyushu Shinkansen stops at) and a smaller Kagoshima Station which is on the opposite side of the city centre. If you are choosing somewhere to stay, I’d say the Kagoshima Chuo area is much more convenient because of the easy train connections. No regrets booking this place!
