Sulbing (설빙) Korean Dessert Café (Day 6)

By now the bingsu (shaved ice) craze has completely taken over the Singapore dessert scene, with new stores opening up every other week, but did you know that it first originated in Korea?

It’s a very popular snack to have in the summertime and of course, when we visited Seoul in the middle of the heatwave season last year, the top thing we wanted to try was bingsu.

Bingsu is much like a super souped up version of our local ice-kachang. Atop a bed of finely shaved ice, different combinations of toppings can be added such as nuts, seeds, seasonal fruits such as mango or strawberries, chewy rice cake, ice cream, red bean etc. Condensed milk is then generously drizzled on top for added flavouring.

There are many dessert shops selling their own customized take on bingsu everywere but one chain that caught our eye was Sulbing 설빙. Besides bingsu, they also sell other types of yummy desserts such as toast, cakes, milkshakes etc. Anybody with a sweet tooth will love this place.

The dessert franchise, which kicked off as a small downtown cafe in the port city of Busan, 453 kilometers southwest of Seoul, has quickly ballooned to 490 branches throughout the country in less than two years as its "bingsu" dish captured local taste buds.

We ordered the cheesecake bingsu as that was highly recommended by the food blogs and it did not disappoint! The dessert is so visually appealing that it’s simply hard to resist.

On a side note, the celebrity spokesperson for Sulbing now is Im Si Wan, who was last seen in the workplace drama Misaeng as the hapless contract worker Jang Geu Reu. Check out the cute promo pics below! Now who wouldn’t wanna eat at Sulbing if there’s a waiter as cute as Geu Reu!

Update (12 Jul): Sulbing has arrived in Singapore! There's an outlet at Jurong Point!
