Gyeonggi English Village (Day 6)

It’s quite surreal finding a full-blown model of an English village right smack in the Korean countryside.

City Hall
Oh wow. Didn't expect to see a replica Stonehenge in Korea!
Map of Gyeonggi English Village

From cobblestoned streets to cozy stone cottages to English landscape gardens and even a replica of the Stonehenge monument, the developers of Gyeonggi English Village spared no effort in creating a living environment that looked like it popped out of a Jane Austen novel.  I half expected people to come dancing out of the houses in their Victorian corsets, bonnets and, top hats!! Haha!

The Gyeonggi English Village is actually a training and educational facility that offers immersive language programmes and camps for students of the English language. By living there and interacting with native speakers as well as other students, participants can learn the language and culture in the context of daily life. It is a pretty remarkable concept that surely will inspire and nurture one’s interest for the language.

Although the official website says that programmes are run year-round, the place was pretty much deserted when we visited on a weekday afternoon. There weren’t any activities to take part in either and there was nothing much to do. For tourists like us, I reckon this place is only good for one purpose: taking photos. I even spotted a wedding studio on site that does pre-wedding shoots too. It should be really lovely to shoot here in autumn.

Admissions is 3000 won for adults and you should be able to find discount coupons in the Gyeonggi-do coupon book provided by the tourist office.

How to get here:

Gyeonggi English Village is a 5 minute walk from Gate # 9 of Heyri Art Village. If you’re coming from central Seoul, you can also take subway Line 2 to Hapjeong Station and hop on bus #2200 from Exit 2 (50mins). The bus stop you alight at will be opposite the English Village.
